Challenge & Solution
I was contacted by Almac Imports to collaborate in the creation and maintenance of their products catalogue.
The first main objective for this project was to automate, as much as possible, the process of importing, formatting, and updating content. With over 1300 SKUs and more than 600 clickable images, updated yearly, manual insertion was not a feasible option.
Fulfilling this objective required the creation of a custom text processing macros, converting spreadsheet data into InDesign readable files. Further expanding automation beyond the application stock capabilities meant developing an additional set of personalized InDesign scripts.
The second main objective was to support the US and Canada markets. This consisted of having a US focused catalogue in English and with prices in US dollars. For Canada two catalogues would be needed, one in English and the other in French, both with prices in Canadian dollars.
To reach this objective, it was crucial to tag the language and currency data of each SKU entry. Doing so allowed switching between, and exporting, the three catalogue variants with ease. Automating tagging and text formatting required multiple techniques.
